Personal, Social and Health Education

At Leesons Primary School, one way that we ensure the development of our children as well rounded individuals is through our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic) curriculum.


We take PSHE very seriously as we believe that if a child is not feeling whole in themselves as a person it is impossible to access the full benefits of an academic education. The intention for the teaching of PSHE is to provide our pupils with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future - developing the whole child so that they can achieve their personal best. As part of a whole school approach, it develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. These specific skills and attributes will provide pupils with the lifelong tools they need to stay healthy, to be safe and to also prepare them for life and work in modern day Britain and beyond. We feel that effective PSHE education should provide pupils with the following: 

  • Accurate and relevant knowledge. 
  • Opportunities to turn that knowledge into personal understanding. 
  • Opportunities to explore, clarify and if necessary challenge, their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities.
  • The skills, language and strategies they need in order to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible, and balanced lives.

Our PSHE curriculum is a detailed and comprehensive spiral curriculum to support the learning of all children. It is specifically designed to be a progressive scheme of work, aiming to prepare children for life, helping them really know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.


Our PSHE curriculum aims to:

  • increase self-confidence and aspirations,
  • learn new skills to support and challenge dreams and aspirations,
  • develop personal strengths,
  • enhance resilience,
  • recognise the need for healthy lifestyles,
  • become independent thinkers,
  • work collaboratively.

In PSHE, we teach 6 topics over the year (one every half term). The topics are:

  • Who we are and how we belong  
  • Everyone Belongs   
  • My Future, My Journey    
  • Healthy Habits, Healthy Life    
  • Connecting with Others      
  • Growing and Changing                        

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)


Effective RSE can make a significant contribution to the development of personal skills needed by pupils if they are to establish and maintain relationships. It also enables children and young people to make responsible and informed decisions about their health and well-being.

Financial Education 

In addition to our PSHE lessons, we follow the Just Finance Foundation Programme. The Just Finance Foundation Programme consists of one lesson every half term for each year group. Just Finance Foundation is a national charity working with schools, families, and change makers to build financially resilient communities where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive. We believe that education is key to improving financial equality over the long-term.


Each half term, EYFS and KS1 learn about finance and the values of wisdom, generosity, justice and thankfulness through a story titled Milo’s Money; children partake in circle time discussions, games and other activities to develop their understanding. 


KS2 consider the following 5 big questions relating to finance over the course of the academic year:

  • Where does our money come from? 
  • How does money make us feel? 
  • What can we use our money for? 
  • How does our money help other people? 
  • How can we look after our money?

myHappymind


Alongside our PSHE curriculum, we are proud to be a myHappy Mind school. As a whole school program grounded in science and dedicated to building positive mental wellbeing, myHappymind helps children understand how their brains work and creates a culture that helps to build children's resilience, confidence, and self-esteem. myHappymind also teaches the children how to self-regulate and manage their emotions in stressful times, allowing them to be their very best selves!


The myHappymind program is delivered across five engaging modules:

  • Meet Your Brain: understanding how your brain works and how to ensure we look after it so that we can manage our emotions and be at our best. Growth mindset is a key part of this too.
  • Celebrate: understanding your unique character strengths and learning to celebrate them. This is a fantastic module for building self-esteem.
  • Appreciate: understanding why gratitude matters and how you can develop gratitude as a habit. Gratitude is key to well-being and resilience and we're all about making it a habit!
  • Relate: understanding why positive relationships matter and how to build them. We're focused on the building blocks of good relationships and friendships.
  • Engage: understanding how to set meaningful goals that matter and how to keep resilient in times of challenge. This module is all about building self-esteem and resilience too.
