Learning in Year 5

Termly Overview - Autumn Term

English

During our first half-term term, the children will be exploring the text 'Tuesday'. Using this entertaining picture book as a stimulus, the children will be producing a range of pieces of writing which include the following: narrative, newspaper article and instructions.

During our second half-term, the children will become fully immersed in William Shakespeare's, 'Romeo and Juliet'. The children will become acquainted with these famous star-crossed lovers and come to realise that not all love stories end happily ever after. Whilst reading Romeo and Juliet, the children will be using their writing skills to produce an emotive letter, balanced argument and diary entry.

Maths

This term in Maths we are covering a variety of topics including:

  • Place value
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Multiplication and division
  • Fractions

Science

In the first half-term, we will be exploring 'Earth and Space'. During this topic, we will be looking specifically at the planets in our solar system, the concept of night and day, and what people (in the past) believed the Earth looked like.

In the second half-term, we will be focusing on the topic 'Animals including Humans'. For this unit of work, we will be exploring the life cycle of a human and identifying how it differs to that of an animal.

Art

In Art, we will initially be focusing on developing our drawing skills, specifically how to sketch and shade 3D shapes. Following this, we will then be experimenting with colour mixing and identifying how shade, tone and tint can be created.

Music

During our music sessions, we will be developing our understanding of rhythm whilst working hard to develop our singing skills.

Geography

The children will be studying mountains. During our geography lessons, we will be exploring what a mountain looks like, how it is created and what the conditions are like for those that dare to climb them. In addition to this, we will also be using our atlas skills to locate different mountain ranges from around the world.

RE

The children will be broadening their understanding of the Sikh religion. During our lessons, the children will be looking specifically at the question, 'How far would a Sikh go for his/her religion?'

ICT

We will be learning how to display data in spreadsheets. Throughout our lessons, we will be exploring how we can not only present data in a spreadsheet, but how we can use the spreadsheet as a tool to calculate amounts.
