Writing
Writing at Leesons Primary School is taught through a consistent and carefully structured approach that ensures clear progression, high expectations and equity for all pupils. A range of high-quality books and texts (including graphic novels, picture books, fiction and non-fiction) are carefully chosen to engage children in their writing, as well as promoting a love of reading.
Our Three-Phase Writing Model
Across the school, writing is taught through a three-phase model: Study, Twist and Create. This approach develops strong transcription skills (spelling, handwriting and punctuation), compositional skills and a rich vocabulary, while building pupils’ confidence to write for a range of purposes and audiences.
-
Study: Pupils explore a high-quality model text (written by the teacher), focusing on purpose, audience, structure, vocabulary and language features. Grammar and punctuation are taught explicitly, and pupils rehearse ideas through talk, discussion and group work.
-
Twist: Pupils adapt the model text by changing key elements such as characters, settings or viewpoints. Writing remains highly supported through shared writing, modelling and structured planning.
-
Create: Pupils independently plan, write and refine their own piece of writing. They apply what they have learnt, edit their work and make improvements, developing accuracy, independence and pride in their writing. Children are given the opportunity to share their final piece through 'publishing', discussion or presenting their work to the class/ year group.
Throughout the writing process, teachers use a range of strategies to support learning, including modelled and shared writing, word banks, targeted grammar sessions, varied feedback, peer assessment, drama and outdoor learning opportunities.
